Volunteer With Us!

Volunteers are essential to the operations of our center and the heartbeat of our organization. By volunteering with us, you will become a part of a dedicated team that supports the women in our community who are unhoused by providing them basic survival needs and a safe place to call home. Here at Sister José Women’s Center, we believe nothing worthwhile can be done alone, so we hope you join us in making meaningful memories and caring connections by serving women in need.

From Our Volunteers

Volunteer Kathleen

“I have been a volunteer at Sister José Women’s Center for the past year, and it has changed my perspective on life. In the grand scheme of things, we are all here to help one another. It’s one of the greatest joys to give time and attention to people in need.”
Kathleen Kirk

Volunteer Susie

“I like to serve in the kitchen, AKA, “my happy place.” I bake, I cook, I serve, I prep, I wash dishes because increasing numbers of women come to us every day experiencing hunger. Food shares love. Smiles radiate love. Through kind words we can express love and change a woman’s life. It has been an honor to participate in the miraculous growth and outreach the center has experienced in the last seven or eight years.”
Susie Voss

Volunteer Lori

“Sister José’s is welcoming, and it feels like home. The women are full of love and compassion. Sometimes it seems like they are someone who could be my friend, and yet, they are in this situation that has brought them here. I wish more people would come and be a part of this. It’s such an impressive place.”
Lori Lowe

“I used to be a volunteer and was homeless myself. One thing I wanted to do after this experience was give back, so I started volunteering at Sister José and fell in love with the place and found a passion for the women here. I know what it’s like to live on the streets and I bring that experience with me every day. The compassion, love, and energy of this organization is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.”

Volunteer FAQs

Who can volunteer?

At Sister José Women’s Center we strive to provide a welcoming and safe environment for all our guests. To make guests more comfortable we only allow female volunteers to work directly with our guests at our facility. With that being said we do offer indirect volunteer opportunities for males. Please check our volunteer calendar regularly to see all our opportunities that best suit you.

All our volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer with us. If you have an interest in serving with a family member or friend who is under the age of 18, please check with our volunteer coordinator to see if we have any volunteer opportunities available for you.

Do volunteers have to complete a background check?

All our volunteers will have to complete a background check before volunteering with us. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests. More information regarding the background check will be provided once you have filled out the application form.

What volunteering opportunities are available?

Our organization has a variety of volunteer opportunities, which are all listed above in the “Volunteer Opportunities” section. Once you are an established volunteer, you will have access to our volunteer calendar where you will be able to sign up for specific volunteer opportunities.

How do I get started?

Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Brenda Druke, at 520-849-7106 or brenda@sisterjose.org to arrange for a personal tour and receive a New Volunteer Orientation Packet to begin your journey of providing direct service to vulnerable women in our community.

Will I receive training?

All volunteers will be required to tour our facilities alongside our volunteer coordinator, Brenda Druke. This tour will provide our new volunteers with a better understanding of our facilities while also allowing Brenda the opportunity to show you how to navigate our volunteer website.

Once you have begun volunteering with us, you will have seven days to complete an online trauma informed care course. This course will only take an hour to an hour and a half to complete. It will prepare you to better understand and serve our guests.

All volunteers who have been established within our organization will be provided with the opportunity to advance their skills through continued training.

What are the hours during which volunteers can help?

Our volunteer shifts are from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Our greatest need for volunteers is our morning shift from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Monday through Saturday. All volunteers will have access to our volunteer calendar where they can see all current and upcoming shifts.

Can I volunteer with family or friends?

We would love for our volunteers to serve with their family and friends, but please note all parties must complete a background check and our required training.

Can I volunteer once, or do I need to make an ongoing commitment?

We encourage an ongoing commitment but understand that schedules are subject to change so we are flexible and incredibly grateful for the level of commitment you would like to contribute to our organization.
