About Us

Sister José Women’s Center is a Tucson-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to aid and transform the lives of women who are unhoused. Our low-barrier day center provides unaccompanied women who are unhoused with a stable and safe environment to recuperate from the daily struggle of homelessness and extreme poverty. Sister José’s is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for our guests by providing life-changing support and resources to begin their transition out of housing insecurity. For many of our guests, we are their only safe haven and the first step to recovery. No opportunity to make positive change within our community will go untouched.

Our History

Sister José Women’s Center was founded in 2009 by Jean Fedigan, inspired by a simple yet powerful belief: women helping women can transform lives. What began as a small winter overnight shelter in a church sanctuary in Tucson provided safety, warmth, and a hot meal for women experiencing homelessness—and quickly grew into a compassionate community grounded in dignity, respect, and connection.

The Center is named in honor of Sister Mary José Hobday, OSF, a nationally respected spiritual leader known for her deep compassion for those on the margins and her belief in the presence of God in everyday life. Her legacy of love, service, and community continues to guide the mission of Sister José Women’s Center today.

The founding of the Center was also shaped by Monsignor Tom Cahalane, a close friend of Sister José, who introduced Jean Fedigan to her in 2003 and became a strong champion of the Center’s mission. Alongside the support of Our Mother of Sorrows Parish and early volunteers, this foundation of faith and service helped bring the vision of Sister José Women’s Center to life.

As the need in our community increased, Sister José expanded into a small home on 18th Street, creating a welcoming space where women could access meals, rest, and supportive services. In 2017, the organization moved into its current location on South Park Avenue, allowing for expanded day and overnight programs and the ability to serve more women with critical resources.

Today, Sister José Women’s Center continues to carry forward Jean Fedigan’s vision and Sister José’s spirit of compassionate service. Rooted in the belief that the purpose of love is to serve, we provide a safe and welcoming environment where women can find stability, community, and hope as they move forward in their journeys.

Founder

Jean Fedigan founded Sister José Women’s Center with the sole purpose of helping women in need. She has built this community and space with compassion, dignity, and respect. Her passion and perseverance have changed numerous lives for the better. As homelessness continues to rise in Tucson, Jean will continue to advocate and support women on their path to a more sustainable future.

Sister José Hobday

1929-2009

Our center was built on the teachings and compassion of Sister José Hobday, a Franciscan nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor. Sister José was one of America’s most popular speakers on prayer and spirituality during her lifetime. Sister José taught “to live life with hands and hearts open, sharing, and serving others.”
